For "single-station" smoke alarms (detectors) are permitted to be disposed with normal trash. "Single-station" are the most common form of smoke alarms in single family homes or within individuals units of multi-family residential buildings. They are often round and afixed to the ceiling or high up on a wall. These may be a wired connection or they may only be battery operated. These are not monitiored by a third-party monitoring service (ie. Nest, ADT).
For smoke alarms that are monitored by third-party services (i.e. Nest, ADT), please consult that third-party service for disposal instructions.
