How do I dispose of fire extinguishers that cannot be refilled or that I do not wish to refill?

Category: Fire Department
To dispose of an old fire extinguisher that cannot be refilled or that you do not wish to refill: Release any pressure contained in the canister by shooting a small amount into an open area. Let the canister sit for a few days, making sure the pressure has been released. Once it is empty: Squeeze the lever above the handle; this will ensure that all contents are discharged. Remove the head; this will let whoever disposes of the extinguisher know that all contents have been discharged. Recycle the steel body after the head is removed with the rest of your ferrous metal. Make sure to follow any instructions on the fire extinguisher. Make sure that your replace your old fire extinguisher with a new fire extinguisher immediately. Old/used fire extinguishers can also be dropped off at Fire Administration at 909 Lake Street for disposal if not able to complete instructions above.
